You can see that Mike is suffering from many lapses of very short term memory. He is clever and fast and covers it up quickly, but some people just get stuck and can't move on. That almost happened to Mike when he got back to the factory for the ring. He knew it was somehow important but was grappling with the lost memory of what it was.
The difference between normal forgetfulness and Alzheimer's disease, is that the normal top of the stairs moments can be recovered by going back, either physically or in your mind, to the point at which you set off to trigger the hidden memory back into consciousness. In Alzheimer's, the memory appears to be truly lost, and no amount of coaxing will bring it back. It must be mightily frustrating.
