can only find howf spelt howff is a scottish pub, resort or haunt and the only words to fit V?R? are vary, vera, verb, very, and vire which dosn't realy help sorry

yes in about 15 days i had my ears pierced last week it has taken 50 years to pluck up the courage, guess i'll get lots of ear rings for my birthday

Yes, I am Scottish, Geo, though I no longer live there...now resident in the effete south, I'm afraid. I became aware of 'chib' only whilst doing National Service with lots of Glaswegians in the mid-fifties. I came from Aberdeenshire where the word was not commonly used back then, though I have sometimes heard it there more recently.
Maybe, Fordward, it's because I'm in my 69th year and you are obviously of an age to have missed the glories of military life! Cheers

Ah! I did say 'maybe' you missed the life, F. I have to say I'm a bit surprised that you didn't hear 'chib' during your service.
I myself did spend later years as a military officer, but picked up 'chib' as a mere erk. Maybe you missed out on the 'Other Ranks' aspect of things altogether? ('Chib' was not a very common word, I found, in the Officers' Mess, old boy!) Cheers

I wouldn't have missed either side of the military 'divide' for the world, F. Both were an 'education' in their different ways and I thoroughly enjoyed them. I never considered myself to be any more 'perfect' in my later role than I had been in my earlier one. Let's just consider ourselves ex-comrades-in-arms.
