Powercuts..

We've just had a lengthy powercut and got me a'thunkin'.. what happens in shops/bars etc.. do people just take the opportunity to sneak out with goods etc.. ?

I was in Sainsburys once when they had a power cut and they made us leave the store.

Yep...they'd probably shut the store.

Most larger shops and bars will ask you to leave.

Smaller shops and pubs will often carry on serving by just opening the till and using a pen and piece of paper to write down the sales and then ring them through the till when the power comes back on.

My thought was surely pitch black... bugger off with the old bottle of booze.. took me a yonk to find matches in the dark for the neighbours... I presume emergency (generated) lighting comes on.. I know that if it fails where I work we have to furkle around in the cellar for the 'emergency lighting' allowing punters to bugger off without paying!!

We have strict 'trading in a powerloss' guidelines. We cannot allow members of the public to remain on the premises. We cannot of course use any of the electronic back office systems and actually last time it happened we couldn't even leave the shop by the rear shop door into the offices or stockroom as the security access keypad could not be turned off. We can only tidy and possiblt manually price stock. The phone system is also connected to the intranet which means only the manager had a mobile on him to contact the area manager and head office operations. It lasted nearly 2 hours as i recall and it was very difficult.

I expect large stores have generators somewhere to give at least some light.

Not totally relevant but was in a store once when all the tills went down and all customers were given the option to guess their bill or leave it!

Personally a tad un-ethicall. ordered a couple of things which were delerved/ left outside my front door nand my boss has said 'ring the company and claim they've not arrived as no-one signed for them... tad harsh or sign of the times....?

if they were supposed to be signed for and weren't, then the postie isn't doing his job (I know it's Christmas, but mail users are still entitled to the service they paid for). I wouldn't take it out on the sender, but you could reasonably claim for undelivered mail from the PO.
