The judge should tell them how it is - abide by the law of the land.

Fundamentally, it's an impossible judgement - religious doctrine, which we must all respect, versus human rights which we must all respect. I can't see a compromise.

Solomon would be hard pressed to come up with the right answer here. How does this work as a compromise? Churches would be free to marry whoever they liked. Registry Offices could perform a marriage for any couple.

That means churches would be free to turn some away, but I think these fellows want gays to have the right to be married in any church – not just those that choose to accept them, so that compromise won’t work for them.

No, Naomi, it's not a 'different' issue, it's the same issue. Equal rights irrespective of marital status, and equal rights irrespective of sexual orientation. If the Church of England already has the legal right to discriminate on one of them, it can quite validly be given the legal right to discriminate on the other.

Bert, the church discriminates against those who are divorced, and I presume if ever legislation obliging churches to marry two people of the same sex came into effect, the same rule regarding divorcees would apply. As I said, it is an entirely separate issue.
