if your MP3 player is plugged in via the usb, it should show up under My Computer as an External or removable drive. Have you tried reformatting the mp3 play via My Computer - right click the mp3 player icon and reformat? This will wipe the whole thing, but may, and I stress the word "may".

Let me know how u get on

will this remove the ability to play the songs though? this is my main concern about formatting it which i did originally consider
what MP3 player is it? If it appears as just a removable or external drive under My Computer then it wont. remember, an MP3 player is essentially an external drive...thats it.
