Pennsylvania 65000 was a swing tune by Glenn Miller & his Orchestra

I think this was at one time the phone number of the White House.

Glenn Miller wrote the song for his wife. The phone number was hers.

It's the phone number of the Hotel Pennsylvania where Glenn Miller used to play.

Rather confusingly, the hotel was situated not in Pennsylvania but in New York City.

I had the same thought geo09239 that this was the phone number for the White House. I have no idea where I got that from but comforting to know I'm not alone!!!
Kingkonk, why does a hotel in NYC have a Pennsylvania phone number?
OK, I've answered my own question by following your link............ :-)
The Statler Hotel in New York City was opposite Pennsylvania Railroad Station and Glenn Miller and his orchestra played there during the Second World War.Pennsylvania 6-5000 was the hotel telephone number and one of the tunes which the band played had this title.

Ellsworth Statler was a renouned hotelier and was made manager of the Hotel Pennsylvania in New York City when it opened in in 1919.

Thirty years later (in 1949) Ellsworth Statlers company bought the hotel outright.

So I guess that after that date the the hotel should be referred to as "The Statler Hotel Pennsylvania"
