No Card Reader Shown. Please Can Anyone Advise?

When I put my cameras SD card into the PC's built in slot, the light comes on but it does not appear on the PC.
Likewise if I plug a USB card reader in to the PC usb or the hub, it makes a bing bong sound but again no card reader appears.
This started yesterday.
I have done a re boot but nothing has changed.
How can I rectify one or preferably both of these situations?

( I just connected the camera by its usb and that was found and I was able to download my images)

I've had a lot better luck with a site called Picasa for downloading and "fixing" photos rather than Windows Photo Gallery I use it all the time here in the U.S.

One thing to double check when inserting your SD card is to get it in the correct slot. My computer has three and newer computers even more. Even though one might get an illuminated light I find that's not really an indication that the card is in the correct slot. Additionally, most SD cards go in kinda awkwardly... make sure it's right side up to insert.

Thank you for your kind reply but I am a retired pro photographer and have been using digital photography since the early 1990s.
I agree with your commenst on the sd cards but I can assure you it was inserted correctlty in both the pc slot and the usb reader.
I am not enquiring about any programs, I am happy with Photoshop, Lightroom and Faststone although I have used Picassa and never Windows viewer.
I just want to be able to see thee card on the PC so I can then download and use.
All other PC functions are fine so what can be wrong?
Maybe when the current back up has finished I might do a system restore?
Though I would prefer to click something to "switch on" the card reader.

Perhaps you are using an SDHC (high capacity) card. Older card readers are not capable of reading this type of card. But a new SDHC compatible reader for £2-3 and all should be well.

I thought you had something then! But no older cards that I have used many times do not come up either.

Try this, assuming your using Windows 7?
Press 'Start' button and type in the search box 'Device Manager' and click on the answer you get. Find the Card reader and see if it has a Yellow exclamation mark against it. If so, 'uninstall' it and shutdown pc for about 30 secs, and restart it. If it's a card reader plugged in to the pc via usb, take it out before you 're-boot' it.

Even if it hasn't got a Yellow exclamation mark against it, sometimes worthwhile to uninstall it and re-install it.

Still strugglong with this one.
I cannot find an item in devices that is obviously Card Reader.
There is however one item with a exclamation mark.
It says:
Unknown device not working properly. Windows has stopped device.
USB code 43.
I have tried rebooting but no change. I have also tried system restore but appear to have no points to draw from.
I can add that I have been trying to do a backup for a couple of days and this has now failed twice after many hours chundering away.

All is now sorted.
I got an IT guy in and he updated all 48 drivers and did a massive cleanup.
All OK now.
