Possible spoiler for anyone who has not seen Xmas special so BE WARNED

Had friends round today and watched yesterdays special of Downton Abbey. At the start the caption read 'One year later' and in the first few minutes it was revealed that Lady Mary was in the last stages of a pregnancy.

This prompted a remark that in one of the final scenes of the last series (ending November 2012) she revealed to hubby Matthew she was expecting? So how could this have lasted a year? Or did she simply agree to try for a child?

All agreed she secretly visited a London doctor/gynaecologist but couldn't remember what for (and Matthew was at the same clinic too).

I don't think she was pregnant....she told him that the doctor had cleared up the problem.
But poor Mr Matthew! Why cant this have had a happy ending for once ??
I take it he is a goner ?
in the last series he made a miraculous recovery from paralysis, so a mere fatal car accidentcan be overcome...maybe by re-emerging in a shower scene years later
Such an awful ending, he must be dead.
The actor who plays him wants to work in the state

Yes, Mary definitely wasn't pregnant at the end of the last episode before the Christmas Special. She had had a small operation to clear up the problem so would be able to conceive in the future.

Thanks people - seems we were all kind of right but not exactly.
Eastenders comes to Downton Abbey. What a miserable Christmas episode ending.
