or is it just a myth bandied around by my mother to get out of housework for a day? and if it really is true, what about tumble drying? what about folding already dried washing?

I have never heard of this superstition, and as I am so old I think I would know it. However, my mother - which would take us back even further - would never wash clothes on Good Friday. She said every drop of water was a drop of blood and although I think it is utter nonsense I still do not do washing on Good Friday. When you think about it many superstitious beliefs are based in religion. Is New Year's Day a religious festival. I don't think so, but perhaps someone will prove me wrong.
Lots of strange superstitions on here for today!

Superstition is nonsense so of course it's just a myth - but my mother used to say if you did the laundry on New Year's Day you would be washing all year - which you would be anyway - so whichever way you look at it, it makes little sense. :o)
