To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee. I think the little girl, Scout, is my favourite no nonsense heroine.

Something of Value, by Robert Ruark. An intense, well written novel of the Mau Mau uprisings in Kenya, East Africa in the 1950's...

Black Beauty by Anna Sewell. Never fails to make me cry.

The Witching Hour by Anne Rice - a jolly good long read which weaves in and out of time.

All the Harry Potters - because they are magical!

Diana Gabaldon's series called Outlander in the US, but here the first book is called Cross Stitch and weaves in and out of time (again!)

All the Dune books by Frank Herbert and the prequels by his son ie House Corrino, Atreides, etc.

Cynthia Harrod Eagles Dynasty series that starts at the Wars of the Roses and goes right up to present day.

My Son My Son by Howard Spring.
A really emotional novel of how parents lay down their lives for their children.In fact all his novels are great .They evoke a sense of times gone by..that dreamy stage between the world wars when life was good but all the emotional undercurrents are there.Romance and tragedy all entertwined.I have read his books countless times.
I have a murder mystery fetish and highly recommend anything by Henning Mankell and James Lee Burke.Lord of the Flies is another great favourite.
Apart from that my other favourites are any classics ,for example Jane Austen,Charlotte Bronte and I love Little Women. Although I am fifty plus I still get a laugh out of Just William !

My Favourite is the Iliad, fantastic story, but then, i'm a collector of myths and Legends, with the Greek ones coming out on top.

Shirley by Charlotte Bronte, because it is about a strong female character but set in a time long gone

I know I am at it again, and I am sure shaneystar2 will laugh at this, but my favourite, not 'favorite' book must be one that has perfect spelling and pronuciation. I am not a snob with words, but worked in Fleet Street (The REAL Fleet Street for 30 years) as a proof reader and find some of the, what can I say, 'uses' of our language just appalling!

'My Family and Other Animals' by the Gerald Durrell is my favourite - just.I've read and re-read every one of his books but this is the only one that remains in my bookshelf. Pure escapism with the description of pre-war Corfu, the natural history of course, but the stars have to be his wildly eccentric and wholly lovable family.

Can't leave out 'Dark Quartet' by Lynne Reid Bank. The real story of the Bronte family..or 'The Snow Geese' by William Fiennes. A real gem.

Tess of the D'Ubervilles by Thomas Hardy, what a heroine; Cider with Rosie by Laurie Lee, a brilliant and witty snapshot of a time I would have wanted to live in; The Stand by Stephen King, the best book he has ever written, I've read it 5 times and I still find new bits that I didn't notice before; The Scarecrow and his Servant and just about anything else by Phillip Pullman, I know these are childrens books but they are just so well written.

The Stars My Destination, also known as Tiger, Tiger by Alfred Bester.

It's a completely engaging non-stop revenge thriller sci-fi opus from a writer who's imagination will make you glow with warmth.
