Fat For Use In Making Bird Feeders
6 Answers
I've just been given some lovely teasels, and I remember some months back someone suggested a way of dipping them in fat and niger seeds, sunflower seeds, etc, to provide winter food for finches. (I think it might have been Rowan who suggested it?) But I can't find the relevant post. Can anyone find the link, please?
Also, bird cake recipes usually involve lard, which I can buy easily enough, but OH has insisted on keeping some beef dripping from a Sunday lunch about six months ago in the fridge and won't let me throw it out on the grounds that one day he will want to eat it on toast. Would this do just as well? My thinking is that lard's an animal product, so dripping would probably be much the same. Any thoughts, please?

2 years ago when we had snow hanging around for weeks I was preparing to go to Big Sis' for Christmas. Had a quick dash to Asda's and bought loads of their cheapest dried fruits, packs and packs of cheap scones - all for the birds. I got some pitiful looks at the checkout and then realised I must have looked pathetic! Another thing we put out for the birds: make up fine breadcrumbs from stale bread, spread on to baking sheets and sprinkle liberally with oil - cheap as you like. Bake slowly in the oven until the crumbs have soaked up all the oil and turned golden. Cool and bag up. Makes an excellent supplement on bird tables and the ground.
