digital radio delay

why is there a delay on digital radio? And how can they transmit the time 'bleeps' on time ?

PS try listening to the Last night of the Proms on Digital whilst watching on terrestrial TV. Yuck!

There is a delay because at the transmission end the signal must be converted from analogue to digital and then compressed, and at the receiving end it must be decompressed and then converted from digital to analogue.
