A Long Shot

Im looking for a book that I read many years ago, and I can remember neither the title nor the author. It's a novel about a woman who is obsessed with losing weight, and joins a slimming club. She is so successful that she becomes a leader of the club. The book is about how these clubs manipulate their members into staying with them - the owner of the franchise is revealed to be a right old fraud. Any ideas?

It definitely wasn't Marian Keyes, it must be about 20 years since I read it. It convinced me never ever ever to spend another penny at a slimming club - and I haven't! I would love to find it and read it aloud to everyone who thinks that such clubs help them!

Yes I read it about 15 years ago, I think. Is it set near Manchester, and does the 'prize' involve a dinner date with the male founder of the Slimming clubs? Maybe if we keep talking about it for long enough someone will come up with the title
