Are there any experts out there, that could tell me what is /has the best performance. AMD or Intel Pentium 4?

I have perused the net, but there is so much conflicting information, it can get a bit confusing. Thank you.

When I purchased a new pc around a year ago, I came to similar conclusions.

To be honest I really think it is a bit like asking "liverppol or Man Utd - which is better" - I think it is all down to personal taste.

Unless you are looking for a REALLY high spec machine and are doing a lot of multi tasking (like CAD programs, Graphics programs etc) (and judging by your next question you are not) I think it won't make any difference.

AMD isn't a specific processor, it's a brand of processors. Overall AMD tend to be a lot better performance for your money then pentiums, mainly because they're much more reasonably priced. I use an AMD TBird 1.4 ghz processor in my pc, and while this is quite well out of date now, it cost a lot less than the similarly performing pentiums around at the time.

Thank you both for replying.

Oneeyedvic - You have put my mind at rest now & I shall pass the info on. You are right, it is only for general use & including Sim games, which don't take up too much memory space - it's usually the super duper ones that do!

tomd - I realise that AMD is a brand of processors, the same as Intel is, but needed to know which would offer the best performance. Someone told me AMD is best, then someone else told me that AMD used to be way in front of Intel, but the gap is closing! No wonder one gets confused - well me anyway!

Thank you again.

My 2d: The pentiums are, without doubt, the better processors. AMDs are cheap and nasty and, on a bench test, the pentiums will-out perform any AMD processor any day.
Um, that's a somewhat misleading answer j2buttonsw.

To say that they are cheap and nasty is clearly an opinion - and to say that P4s outperform in benchmark tests is also up for debate. One of the main factors is that in general AMD processors run at lower clock speeds for comparable performance levels, and also at lower temperatures. They also tend to be cheaper, especially with the advent of both companies ranges of 64-bit systems.

Thank you again all.

j2buttonsw - My daughter bought the HP Pavilion A740 Intel Pentium 4 - 160GB - 256RAM yesterday from Staples @ 499.99. Along with the HP 15" TFT monitor @ 199.99. She's more than happy with it & will upgrade to 512RAM at a later date if necessary. Thanks for putting my mind at rest! Cheers..

Very basic summary:-

AMD better for playing games and for value for money better than Pentiums.  AMD also do the XP 64 bit processor which knocks the socks off Pentiums!

Intel Pentiums are better for mathematical computations - i.e. desktop applications like Excel etc.

I use a Pentium 4 3.2g in my laptop but I would have chosen a AMD XP 64bit if the laptop manufacturer had it as an option.  In all my previous PCs I've always had AMDs, mostly because I played games on them all the time.

Kebab - Thanks for that, but our Granddaughter will only be playing Sim games on it & for general home use, so it should be ok.

does anyone know which processor (pentium4 or amd) to suggest if using autocad and playing games on? nothing major just the sims or something. or would both run them happily?

thanks

Can't believe I've received another post exactly 1 year on from my original question - amazing!

I do think you'd be better off posting a new question on Int & Tech rubberball, as this isn't a current question & you probably won't get any answers. Good luck.

It's ok rubberball, I've posted a question on Int & Tech for you & posted this link, so maybe someone will be along soon to help!
I've just bought an AMD based system for my brother which is used to run AutoCAD 2006 and play games like Civilisation IV.. it works fine and was cheaper than the Intel based equivalent. I would recommend AMD.
Because of my work, I always have two machines, and replace each of them in alternate years. Having had AMDs for at least 5 years, last year one of them was replaced with an Intel. This year, instead of replacing the older AMD, I will be replacing the Intel with an AMD.
Anyone ever heard of recursion?!!!
