I have been given glasses, but i have a very low prescription and the difference they make is minimal - just when i look at things in the distance they become a tiny bit sharper round the edges - i can still see the things and read signs etc i just wondered if wearing these will in the long run make my eyes deteriorate in the same way unused muscles atrophy?

my eyesight is actually better without the glasses for close up!

I'm in exactly the same position. My script is very weak but before i got them i would get very tired when i was driving (especially at night). I never wear them indoors and cant see close up with them on. They will slow down the deteriation if you use them for what they are designed for.

well, i only went for a test as my family has a history of glaucoma, the first optician said i did NOT need glasses, she sent me to a specialist to do more checks on my eyes, as one was aching a bit - the specialist also said i do NOT need glasses. i went back to the original optician for my results but she had been a locum and the optician there at the time said she would give me glasses based on my prescription - thats how weak they are!
If thet are right for your eyes then there is nothing to worry about. The glasses will make you appear more intelligent.
I too was in the same boat a couple of months ago. I really didn't want to get the glasses as I considered it an unnecessary expense for such a weak prescription - but I haven't looked back since! I had loads of compliments from people saying the glasses I have really suit me, and I am no longer as tired as I was, which is great. I am still worried about the long term effects - but worst case scenario I would have to wear them all the time - so what?! People do that every day!!
in general, people come to rely on their glasses, so their eyes do deteriorate. I'd say only use them when you need them - not for reading but perhaps for driving, where you need vision as sharp as you can get it.

Eyesight does not deteriorate through wearing glasses.

I have had a weak prescription for some time now purely for driving because my sight would (only just) not pass the requirements to drive. if this is the case then you should be wearing your glasses to drive and may be breaking the law or invalidating your car insurance if you don't. but if it isn't then please yourself. it sounds like, like me your distance vision is failing but your near vision is not.

I never knew that my vision was failing, only got my eyes checked because my husband did and I think the opticians were doing a two for one. that was seven years ago and I have only had my prescription increased once!
