Wireless network issue

I have a Netgear wireless router and a Netgear WG121 802.11g wirleless Network adapter. The trouble is, next door also have a wirless router and the problem is, I always connect and use next doors router as my gateway, thus using up next doors bandwidth. Both routers are set up to DHCP, but how can I force the default gateway to use my router. I have been trying to set up static IP addressing but must be doing something wrong as I still can not connect to my router.

what do you want to do, just connect your PC through your router onto the internet? just give your wireless network a name, and choose that name to connect to on your PC. and encrypt your network, with WPA ideally. tell your neighbour to do the same, and stop anyone else from connecting.

go start>control panel>network connections>right click on the wireless adaptor>Wireless Networks.You should then be able to see all the wireless networks, then, delete (remove button) your neighbours network from the list, so your left with just yours, or add yours if its not already there.

when you start your computer up it should offer you the option of connecting to the available networks and show you a list of the ones in range, you just then connect to yours and not next doors.

also, your router would have come with instructions, giving an address to access the router settings.

it'll be something like "goto your web browser, type in 192.168.1.1".. but some manufacturers choose a slightly different address. go into that (it may ask for password, the default will be given in the manual), and goto the wireless page. there you can name your network, and also enable encryption. if your computers all support it, choose WPA (or WPA-PSK it may be called), and enter a password. note the "text" password that you entered, and the weird "hex" one that it may have generated for you. then just enter those into your computers that you want to give access to.
