There was always tension between them and it came to a head. I think there was a dispute and then Gaye Snr abused Marvin's mum. Marvin Jnr responded and Snr shot him twice with a gun Jnr had ironically given him. Gaye Jnr was in the depths of his career and battling drug addiction and Snr was a bit of a mentalist aswell.

As gary baldy says, there was a history of mental illness in the gaye family - Mr gaye was known for wearing women's clothing around the house, and Marvin had a serious drug and depression problem.

It certainly adds to the argument that you shouldn't have guns - because people have a tendency to use them!

If I recall there was something about Marvin wanting a party in his own house and his dad was against the idea??

So basically the Gaye's have some big issues :-)
If by party you mean 'loads of drugs and hookers' then you are right. Gaye Snr was a minister and Gaye Jnr had some very 'interesting' immoral habits that Snr was understandably opposed to (being tied up naked and having M&Ms thrown at him allegedly).
Very sad really - i remember hearing the news on my 13th birthday and i cried on the way to school (sensitive child wasn't i?)
Whats Going On is my all time favourite album ever!.
Why do you ask anyway dcannon?
Don't know. Ask me one on sport.
His father (as gary baldy mentioned) being a preacher also objected to his record Sexual Healing, this also added to the tension.

He was born on the same day as me, and shot one day before his birthday (1st April 1984).

Also a big fan.
