I've got friends who play, and their attitudes towards refs is fantastic. So different from other games. Okay, football.

I agree with that JJ. Someone once described the two games thus. Football is a gentleman's game played by hooligans, rugby is a hooligans game played by gentlemen. that goes for a lot of the so called fans too methinks.

Football players spend so much time whingeing about the referee.

Rugby players know that the referee can't see the whole pitch for the whole game, so he's going to miss things, but the guys I know just say ... If anyone thinks they could do a better job, I'll buy them a whistle.

Indeed JJ. There are usually roughly 8 referees at any match I officiate in, but all are reticent to do the course when approached!
The main benefit is that none will argue my decisions, such is the ingrained ethos of rugby.
