This computer, a Toshiba Satellite, has Windows 8. It's a complete pain to use. Is it possible to rid it of W8 and install W7 instead? What problems does that create?

Windows 8 is just Windows 7 with Aero removed and a clunky bit of touch screen interface stuck on top. If you simply add Stardock start8, you can essentially treat it as a Windows 7 machine. http://www.stardock.com/products/start8/

Thanks. Done that ,and there's a great improvement.
Dunno if you noticed it, but in the "Desktop" section of the Start8 configuration screen, there's an option "Automatically go to the Desktop when I sign in".
If you check that option, you need never even see the Windows 8 confusion panel.
