Will Open Office Cope With .doc Documents?

I've been using Word 2003 for ages, with Vista; I've just upgraded to Windows 8 which does not support Word 2003. I thought that Works for Windows (I have version 8.5) would cope with all my saved Word documents but even when I put the settings to "all file types" Works will not import them, saying that it does not recognise .doc documents. If I download Open Office, will that do the trick? Or is there a way of converting my .doc things into something that Works will recognise? Thanks for any help to save me faffing around unnecessarily.

Yes has worked fine for me, and you can also do a save as option once you've opened it once and save it as an open office document.

Open office has its own version of word which opens most of my .doc documents with no problem. The only one it wouldn't open had an animation embedded in it.

The simpler and less advanced formatting in the .doc the more chance OO has.

I should be alright then Bazwillrun as my documents are all really basic - I downloaded OO last night from one of the many sites offering it, when I had finished and opened it up, everything was in French! I don't know how that happened, my French is reasonable so it's not a big problem but I think I will remove it and try again.
