How can they possibly describe the quotation as "2,3,4,5,6&7"? I make it 2,1,5,6,4,1,2,9,5!

The quotation is in the Oxford Dictionary of Quotations - editions 2 to 7!

Thanks, kayakamina!
Hello magwitch and Kayakamina,
I enjoyed this EV. The first pass through yielded very few gifts. I must admit the omission of letters from the subsidiary indications was more of a challenge than extra letters in subsidiary indications! On the other hand, Bradfords was really helpfull! I'll repeat my assertion that every home should have one!
I had trouble with the quotation, and the person who is reponsible for the quote, I'd never heard of him, I'm just a simple scientist! I thought it sneaky that the key words in ODQ are not those in the actual clue order!
Forgot to mention that I thought the "quoters" arrival in the grid was very clever, as was the link to the EV title!
Oh, stop being obtuse DocHH! haven't finished it yet, very bottom heavy at the moment, but it seems a comfortable EV that one can plod along and get there in the end. Haven't yet analysed the left out letters so am no where near the quote. Back to the grind-stone as we have guests tonight for a birthday dinner/mah jong session so have to rev up the oven and get the fizz on ice! Menu is Canapes, Beef Strog. and (as the birthday Boy is a pud afficianado) Raspberry Bread & butter Pud/Damson Crumble/ Chocolate, raspberry, mint cream. A rather nice red & white Roija and some vintage port with the cheese.
Sounds far too moreish Devadolly and much better than struggling with obscure quotations. I started this late afternoon and galloped through much of it, but have now ground to a halt, with most of the answers in. I expected to have no trouble with the quote but can't find it, as yet, in my ODQ. Will look afresh on the morrow.
No sooner written than inspiration struck and I managed to find the quote and its author online. I now appreciate DocHH's comments. Two clues to go, plus one query.
All done and dusted, now It's funny, DocHH how differently we all approach these puzzles, and our preferences etc. I actually find it easier to be a letter short rather than a letter over.
Late start due to weekend guests - not sure they ate as well as your guests, Devadolly, although we did down a very good Chateauneuf du Pape.

I enjoyed this puzzle a lot - thanks Jaques. I too liked the way the quoter's name appeared and I might have missed it as we were not required to highlight it.
I highlighted it anyway. They surely won't disqualify me for that.

DocHH says he had trouble finding the quotation in ODQ but I looked up the word starting with 7d in ODQ 4
I have finished the grid with the exceprtion of 8a & 9d which I cannot get. I am convinced my 17a must be wrong but the current answer fits all the criteria. Also, my selection of letters seems very odd (but then they always are) and are making no sense at all. Please help.
PS the choc/raspberry/mint invention was a great success!
Hi DD

8a ICE - reserve ...C(heroke)E 'losing heart' + i (extra letter)

9d CHIEF - outstanding...CH (child) IE (that is) + F (extra letter)

That should resolve your query for 17d.
Thank you K, my 17d was incorrect, I had assumed the wrong abbreviation for force. Still ahsn't got me any nearer with the letters, will stare afresh!
DD, it's a foreign quote. I have the requisite ODQ but couldn't find it in it. It came up easily in Google.
Devadolly,
I checked with herself, the Abridged ODQ (version 5), which is in her flat does not include the "Quoter"! The original poster gave an accurate breakdown of the letters in each word (ignoring apostrophes) in the quote. If you only have an Abridged version of ODQ, I suggest you try an on-line search!
gen2, my version of ODQ (version 7) does not include any of the words created by the missing letters, obviously a retrograde step in the compilation of ODQ's after version 4!
In fact I am not actually convinced the phrase is accurately represented in my ODQ!
