Further to the discussions on yesterdays page - can I comment on this - we (Scotland) Ireland and Wales have our own anthems - so why does England use God Save the Queen, when it is the BRITISH anthem? What do you say Wharton, fellow countryman and possible neighbour!!!

My Shetlander relatives will however vote to join Norway, rather than Scotland :-)
wonder how many of the scots who have made a comment live in englandshire
Whooah ... Italy beat France !!
I'd rather win the game than the singing. Looks like the Scots have mounted a robust defence of their wooden spoon!
In answer to your question Mags, England uses God Save the Queen as a (not too) subtle declaration of who is in charge in the UK. Let's all sing the 6th verse:-

Lord grant that Marshal Wade
May by thy mighty aid
Victory bring.
May he sedition hush
And like a torrent rush
Rebellious Scots to crush
God Save the Queen.

Sing up Mags, I can't hear you :-)

Makes my blood boil,Wharton, but at least we are rebellious, not lying down and rolling over!
dream on about separation if three Scots down here this last weekend were anything to go by, the want for it dissipating by the day as sane Scots realise the full implications and that also they will be side-lined by the EU as they have to apply for membership....

As to the English anthem, a big yes, Jerusalem or Land of Hope and Glory. Can we have a referendum on it, at the same time as Salmond's fiasco?
to be fair, danger, I think that, on that performance, Scotland stand a good chance of seriously rattling the other four. They aren't pushovers this year.
I thought we had one- "swing low".
Question Author
Swing low is lovely, but is actually what was known as a Spiritual , and really doesn't mention England, whereas Jerusalem does
Jerusalem also counts as a religious number though, too, mags.
Mags - Once again no answer given to your question, but some quaint remarks about separation, independence, entry to the EU etc. Everyone in England would appear to be an expert on these matters. I hope you don't mind me using your thread to say to them that the forthcoming independence referendum in 2014 applies to Scots only, no-one else in the UK can vote (contrary to what Mr. Cameron tried to dictate), and we're not really interested in your opinions. As to your anthem, you can whistle Dixie for all we care.
Question Author
Thanks Wharton , for your words of wisdom, I don't know how total independence would work, can't vote as living in England, and really not sure how I'd vote if I was able - despite wanting our Freedom I think the practicalities of it are maybe a bit too difficult, , but thats another thread for another day.
I couldn't agree more Mags, but we'll wait and see what happens. I know I shouldn't rise to their bait and just ignore them but they can be so irritating at times :-).

I would like to see what the Scots who vote yes are going to do when the (large) majority reject it. Emigration I hope......
Another English expert Mags, this one even knows there will be a (large) majority. Maybe we shouldn't bother with the referendum and just ask them what the result was :-)
God, you are so easy to wind up, wharton!
We'll go digital after independence :-)
I sincerely hope the Scots achieve independence. They at least will have a chance to thrive outside the EU, For the rest of UK, I doubt we'll ever have independence, so good luck Scotland.
Because it's our national anthem as well Mags:
