If you click the link it explains how the restraunt biz in the 30's used numeric codes. I work as a truck technician and we use American Trucking Association codes for part failures, work performed, identifying assemblies and parts etc. The code for a "lost or missing" part is 86...According to its website the ATA was foundeded in 1933. I didn't see anything about the codes or when they were created or recorded. Strange coincidence of meaning between the pop culture 86 and the Part Failure Code 86.
To be 86ed refers to the effects the North American F86 Saber Jet had on the Soviet Mig during the Koren War. With a kill ratio of 10 to 1 (in favor of the F86), to be 86ed is to be shot down (sometimes in flames!!!). Most early uses tend to be bar (the type you drink in) related, i.e. when a patron was being ejected with force for fighting, ect.
