Well, its going to be bright, but I don't think there is any real prospect of a close encounter between the Earth and ISON, Sandy.So I am sure some will view it as an augury, or perhaps to make doomladen prophecies, but I do not think this is a realistic candidate for some sort of world-ending doomsday scenario :)

I think the closest approach is approx. 40 million miles - slightly further away from us than Mars.

That's a pity. A close shave for us all would be just what the unGodly need to prompt a reappraisal of their Godless ways.
The ungodly knew about this ages ago. It's called science.
