You can't get top speed on 3G, and if you use the tablet for gaming or watching videos the data is soon used up.
Many households connect more than one device to the router. Yes, you can turn your 3G in to a wifi hotspot but that is very draining on the battery and again think of the data use.
Ditching the phone line is great if you have a desktop or laptop and use Skype; not so good if the only device is out with your partner and you need to use it to make a call, although I suppose you'd have a mobile phone.

I ditched my landline about 3 years ago. I have a laptop that I use (although not very often any more) with a dongle by O2 which is pay as you go. I don't charge this each month only when I need it. I also have a ipad2 3G which is also with O2. I pay either £15.48 or £10.32 per month depending on how much data I use.
To update either my laptop or my ipad I go to a couple of local places that have wifi (usually a pub) and spend the afternoon there. (Very sociable)
This works for myself but watching films and downloading lots of games it would probably not be suitable.

I also have unplugged the landline, only use it for outgoing calls. I have an Ipad with Wifi and 3g and use a Samba sim in it for when I'm out and about. No data charges, just view ads to credit your account with MBs. You can also, if you wish, top up with cash, but that's like an other sim top up and runs out in 30 days, I think. The ad credits don't run out. Really good idea.
