I'm getting an iPad.

What are the lessons I need to learn straight away?

What apps are essential?

What apps are not essential but fun?

What should I do?

What shouldn't I do? (using it as a chopping board is a given!)

^^^ That obviously should have read 'Your New iPad', it is an appropriate typo as every user of an iPad grumbles about typos due to the 'keyboard'!!!
Eccles, if you buy it through the Apple Store they will give you a lesson on using it (actually I think the Apple Store may give you a lesson no matter where you bought it but I can't be sure)
There are loads of fab foodie apps, most of which are free.
Don't panic when it does something and you don't know how to fix it (eg, the on-screen keyboard splits in half, you can't get the display to change from landscape to portrait, etc). Either ask a 12 yer old or ask on here how to sort it. Lots of the apps have a free trial thingie so. Can try before you buy. Enjoy.

Mine has been bought (legitimately) through a very convoluted overseas method!

I did see a group of silver surfers in the local Apple store having a teach-in, they all came armed with pencil and paper which gave me a wry smile!

Where the hell am I gong to find a 12 yr old, I can hardly hang around school gates I'll get reported ;-)

The iPad has been procured, I'm not binning it!
Buy something to wear with a big pocket as I can guarantee you won't want be without it.
when it turns on. programme it to say something suitable in a crowded room and not 'eh up bonny lad how's in hanging' like my OH has on his.
my son's greets him with 'hello master of the universe how are you today'
we've got a mini. Something I learned pretty quickly was not to use it whilst trying to fall asleep in bed at night. Just wakes you up and then you get hooked on the games that you can download.

Also if you've got "fat fingers" like us, get one of those stylus things, they will really help you use all the various bits and bobs.

Chox.
Don't leave it on the seat of your car next summer, or in the car if the temperature is going to drop below about 20 degrees F (sorry, I'm in the U.S.). The screen will be blank and will need to either warm up or cool down to the operating temperature before it will owrk again.

Learn how to lock the screen to avoid the agravating habit it has of "rolling over" to align the display with the way your holding the device...

Keep clicking 'Next' and then, when you've digested all that info, try the links underneath.
Watch out for the strange ads that sometimes pop up on AB. Seem to be connected with the right hand side of the screen.
Points to note:
Highly addictive
Cats love them
Get a stylus
Enjoy.
I'm still struggling with mine, got it for Christmas. I did buy the book iPad for dummies, that helped a bit, was £25 in Smiths got it for £11 ish on amazon.
Love some things on iPad, get infuriated with others. Just a vas of perseverance, good luck.
Sorry case!
They talk? How do I get mine to do that?
