There may be something in the other answer. A lot more likely is that following his confrontation with "drink-sodden, former trotskyist popinjay" Christopher Hitchens at the Senate Committee hearings on the Oil for Food Programme, the "rematch" (a public debate held in New York) was billed as something of a boxing/wrestling match between "political heavyweights". The "fight" got the nickname "the grapple in the big apple" and Galloway, "Gorgeous George" (after the former wrestler).
