Unsolicited Emails

I have been sending out emails asking people to pray for the gay marriage debate with a video on you tube. Just asking people to pray. I have been sending to ministers all over the UK. I have been on the net for hours and I made a typo and I sent one to the wrong person and he asked me how I got his email address ( I told him) and he says what I am doing is illegal ?? I dont see how I gave my full name and town in the video.

Interesting gordie! I get unsolicited mail all the time and there seems to be little you can do about it, but I have never thought for one minute that it was illegal. Might be better to find out from someone more informed than I am though!

It depends upon what you have said in your email. And how you phrased it is very important too.

Then its perfectly legal to email him/her as they have posted their email address for all to see.

Just be careful that the content isn't illegal, otherwise ignore their comments.

its basically stated my beliefs about gay marriage as wrong quoting bible verses and askin people to pray but no offensive comments or homophobic remarks so i cant see how it is illegal

The only way the emails would turn out to have been a bad idea would be if you had been offensive or homophobic or threatening. It sounds like you have just put your view across without being unpleasant.

I am not sure if I agree with the concept of Gay marriage - the civil partnerships (or whatever they are called) are a huge move in the right direction.

I would just ignore his comment, gordie1.
I can't see him wasting his time on this or anyone being interested in pursuing action against you.
I'm not sure whether you mistyped an address and it went to a stranger who had no connection with you or the church or whether you sent one to someone whose name was on your list.

The Privacy and Electronic Communications (EC Directive) Regulations 2003 makes it illegal to send unsolicited emails "for the purposes of direct marketing":

Other unsolicited emails are NOT covered by the legislation.
