Looking at my feet I wondered why do we have toes? They don't do anything. I know we grip with them but they could be all in one and still grippable!

we are descended from primates, as you know .. early primitive apes had longer toes on their feet that resembled and worked like fingers (much like the primates of today)
as humans evolved and learned to walk upright, the need for clasping fingers on the feet was diminished

I knew a girl who had to have both her big toes amputated, she had to learn to walk again afterwards. Big toes are for balance, we could manage without our other toes a lot easier.
