I got a new Sony Trinitron integrated Digital TV a few months ago. This is in the bedroom and we are being wakened at irreguar intervals by the set making pistol-shot type noises! It is unplugged and there are no timers activated etc. I contacted Sony but they are at a loss..saying it could be the casing cooling off after hours of viewing.! You wouldn't need to be of a nervous disposition...it really is alarming...any ideas anybody and has anybody else experienced this?

It happens with a lot of my stuff....as it cools down the plastic on the tv moves slightly and causes the cracking sound....in the summer the plastic soffet boards on my roof make a clicking sound when they cool down at night.....you get used to it after a while.

Yes, Sir, I understand about plastic expanding and contracting etc but WHY has this never happened with any other TV that we have had in the same position in the same room? Sony don't think it is a problem....they should try being "shot" x number of times a night!
All Sony Digital TVs have an inbuilt defence system to prevent theft. If they detect any movement or even breathing when the lights are out, they assume boiglers and start firing. It is essentail (for your own safety) that you do one of the following:

1) Hold your breath
2) Leave the lights on
3) lock the TV in the basement when not in use

I'm surprised that no member of your family has been injured so far...
or wear a kevlar nightie...
Are you sure you can't hear galloping horses, too? Clearly, your TV resents being turned off just as a western is about to start. YOU might not want to watch it, but the TV does. Be thankful that, as it has no eyes, it has no need to activate the display screen, otherwise it would keep you awake continuously with its glow.
