however the battery light comes on when turning the ignition, but nothing else happens the is no lights and cant use remote lock.when the car came to a stop i checked under the bonnet, there was no smoke or anything to indicate there was a problem,so the car is just dead but the battery does work.

petrol?

more info required i think !, at the moment it could be anything - a loose battery connection / broken or unattached lead / immobiliser malfunction.

what car is it ?. Does the engine turn over on the key ?. Do the lights and radio work ?.

Check fuses and relays.
Maybe it's a high tension lead that's become disconnected - ie the one from the coil to the distributor.
Is it electronic ignition? if so it may be linked to the starter solenoid. I had a vauxhall nova that used to do this and ended up having the whole ignition system changed. That wasn't before the garage had replaced practically everything else on the car before finally discovering the problem (Never take your car to a vauxhall main dealer for repair).

Sounds like a blown fuse, find the fusebox which may be under the bonnet, usually a black box marked ''fuses and relays'' or under the dashboard and check the fuses for a blown one. For some info on how to proceed check out this site or this site.
