My 11 year old son showed me yesterday that his knees are covered in red spots (raised and bumpy but no pus). Now looked again and he has them on his elbows and wrists too but none on his torso or face. He had a sore throat and a temperature which now seems to have eased into a cold. The ones on his knees are slightly itchy but the others aren't.

Any ideas?

Sounds like contact dermatitis , however I would wait for another more knowing soul to answer. Maybe a fluke with the other symptoms .
Glandular fever ?
Allergic reaction?
It could be anything. If it develops further tomorrow I would think maybe strep throat, my son had it a couple of years ago and it started on his ankles then spread to cover his whole body within 48 hours. His started with a sore throat, high temperature and mild earache.

Apart from the cold he seems fine in himself now but he was quite poorly for a couple of days. Other than Calpol he hasn't had anything out of the ordinary. I'll just keep an eye on it over the weekend.

Thank you.

Hope it isn't a strep infection - we had a fright with one of those a few years ago when he ended up with post streptococcal glomerolunephrites. High Blood pressure and peeing blood - had to have his kidneys monitored for months. Bit worried now but he seems fine other than the cold and the spots.
It could just be fifths disease but the rash usually shows on the trunk or face first with that. It could also just be a viral rash (unknown origin), they are so common in children that it is nigh on impossible to diagnose (according to my GP) :)

thanks Daffy - i'll see what it is like tomorrow, if it's viral that usually goes pretty quick I think?
It,s Erythema Nodosum.......Google it.

A hypersensitivity reaction to an infection in your son's case viral in nature but could , just could be to a streptococcal infection

Monitor the situation, but if he becomes febrile, then see your GP.
Annie.....I have given further thought to your son.......in my opinion , with a past history of acute glomerular nephritis it may well be a good idea to see you GP sooner than later as, if it is streptococcal then a course of penicillin may well be advisable. If viral......then no harm done.

Thanks sqad - he is full of the joys of spring today, just a slight cough and the odd sneeze - but the spots are still there. Says his throat isn't sore at all.

I will definitely keep an eye on him and if it isn't clear I'll get an appointment for Monday or go to out of hours if there is a change for the worse.
Thanks annie.
