'northern' is a funny way of saying 'first letter of', so it's T(he) + WINE.

Northern port = Tyne
Wind In Port = w

so Twine
'northern' is a funny way of saying 'first letter of',
so it's T(he) + WINE.

Thank you both, I was going down the route taken by Nibble but was concerned about the Y; I like the idea of Northern as first letter as it is a Down clue.
Funny how different people reach the same answer - I thought of Northern (i.e. Yorkshire) 'the' being T' followed by (port) wine!
