This is a bit of a cheeky question but here goes. I get a spot on cat wormer from my vets and I've seen I can buy it on line for half the price - trouble is they ask that you post a prescription directly to them every time you order to comply with government regs -do they actually insist on a prescription before they can supply the wormer? -has anyone ordered the wormer and never sent a prescription and still got the goods -I ask because its for a cat that needs worming every month and the vet would charge me £5 to write a prescription. thanks

If you are able to buy a prescription drug without a prescription, then you are probably getting a fake or counterfeit drug. All reputable pharmacies (online or not) have to be able to to audit their drugs and prescriptions. It probably isn't worth taking the risk. I saw some counterfeit Advocate sold by a seemingly "legit" online pharmacy. The packaging...

Hmmm... had the same trouble buying anti-arthritis medicine for my dog. Vets charge for each monthly prescription.
You could try:
www.inhousepharmacy.co.uk
they might be able to suggest an equally effective de-wormer available over the counter. Good luck

Thank you for replying Scyclax -I can buy cat wormer over the counter at my local feed merchant but its not as effective as the vets stuff -i have a cat who delights in eating mice even though she's got food in her dish at all times - so de worming for tapeworm is essential -i will give that link a go though and thanks for taking time to reply.
I buy mine online without sending them anything, tho I do use drontal and frontline these and buy them from Amazon

Should you worm a cat every month? It might be harmful? I would think a good wormer will last for three months - I worm mine every three months with Profender spot on from the vet, its around £6.00. You will need a prescription for this online but for £6 every three months its not worth getting it online. Please check it is safe to worm your cat more frequently.

thanks smurfchops - its under the vets direction to worm every month with profender - she said profender only kills the adult stages of tapeworm and if a cat is constantly hunting and re-infecting then monthly worming is recommended -it also states this on their website.
That's fine then !

It probably isn't worth taking the risk. I saw some counterfeit Advocate sold by a seemingly "legit" online pharmacy. The packaging looked perfect but the contents turned out to be pyrethroids. Totally toxic to cats and likely to have killed them if applied.
Go on to any of the online vet suppliers and there will be a guide to buying prescription medicines - I'm fairly sure the vet will write a prescription for several months at a time but I believe by law they have to see the animal every few months. I have had 'country cats' over the years who hunted but still didn't worm them anything like every month (or is it one of the wormers that you actually give every month, like some of the flea treatments, rather than just an ordinary wormer that would usually be given every 3 or 6 months?)
I use Vet Medic Pharmacy or Hyperdrug.

lil'lucy -thank you for your post -that is a very valid point and has decided me to just get my meds from the vet - our cat is too precious to risk giving dodgy meds to.

lankeela - I am following veterinary advice on the worming programme. Profender is usually given monthly up to the age of 6 months then every three months - veterinary advice I have been given is that a cat that hunts and eats mice on a regular basis is exposed to tapeworm and to prevent overburden of these worms is is advisable to worm monthly.
The best wormer: and it wont harm your cat like all these chemicals.

thankyou for the link Ratter -we use this product for our hen house -the problem is administering anything orally to our cat is pointless -she will only eat dry cat food and if it were in tablet form it would go the way of all tablets ever administered to her - in her mouth until a suitable private moment when the offending tablet would be spat out ;-)
