Why is it that every house has its own "smell" yet you are never really aware of your own house's "smell?"

I remember a story of an guy living in an old block of flats and his flat ALWAYS smelt like cat wee. Anyway, his friends and family would visit and remark on the awful smell. What was happening was, he was leaving the window open of a night and whilst in bed, every neighbourhood cat would nip in and use his flat as a lavatory.
When asked "Why the hell do you leave the window open all night?"
He would reply "To get the smell of cat p**s out!!!"

People say our home smells of bleach.
We have laminate flooring throughout and we give it a weekly mop, we cant smell bleach at all??
You won't be able to though because you are de-sensitised to it.
Mine sells of a big moulting dog, a moult that seems to be going on for months, my friends are too polite to say they can smell it, if I can then they definitely can.
My sisters always says my home smell nice. I think it's the laundry detergent I use in the wash. There's always clothes drying on a 'rack' in foyer.

I don't really smell anything.
My daughter told me that she could smell my house from down the street last week. I was quite worried until she said that she meant the new plug in air freshener (Yankee Candles) that I have been using. I didn't think the smell was that strong :-/

At least she wan't referring to my two stinky cats :)
