That must have been torturous, Sandy. Did they keep the 'evidence'?
When we moved into our cottage the fireplaces had been boarded up - we've put them back into commission thing we 'would save money' on heating - not on your nelly -coal is £6 for a 25kilo bag which lasts about three days if you're lucky and only put the fire on after 3pm -we are still spending around £150 a month on oil for the heating as well and the thermostat never goes above 20C- 2 bed tiny cottage not a chateau!

It was an Irish Guards beret and I had the cap badge in a tin of bits of junk. Though I didn't come across it until later. But what clinched my release was when I pointed out that the wig was covered in hair lacquer. What self-respecting RA man would have been seen in something like that?

Society, I never did get them back. I've a suspicion that my beret and my old mums wig are adorning some regimental museum back on the mainland.
