Well it depends what she likes. My parents/siblings got me stuff for the garden and a nice plant in a pot for outside.

I think its nice to have a keepsake for such a milestone. My family got me a beautiful engraved silver tray to hold the lovely cut glasses and bottle of champagne to go with it. I still use them with pride.

what about one of those make-over packages, where you spend the day being pampered and have hair, nails and make up done, and then they do a photo shoot and she will have some beautiful photos to remind her of her 40th.

My Mum looked after our 2 sons (10 & 12 at the time) so we had a weekend away in Jersey - the first time we'd had a child-free trip. She never offered again though! It was bliss!

I was 40 last week : (

My husband got me a nice watch and a silver necklace. My mum took the children overnight and paid for dinner, bed and breakfast in a nicer hotel than we would have got for ourselves.
She also got me a birthday cake with Benedict Cumberbatch ( Sherlock ) on it so I spent last weekend licking his face : )
