Nexus 10

Hello all I have just bought a Nexus 10 and am trying to set it up to allow me to copy files from a USB drive or external hard drive . I have bought the correct OTG adaptor and down loaded a file manager app. Also I downloaded an app called USB OTG Helper, Now when I connect the drive I wish to Copy from I get an error message saying Root cannot be found this programming will not work. Then it starts searching for a Root but never finds one, am I missing something here?
