There are a number of aggravating factors
He hit her multiple times
He kicked her
This was not a first violent offense
Apparently he has pschological problems, but that's not enough to warrent a non-custodial sentence.
Looks to me like a classic case of where the CPS needs to appeal the sentence

It gets better:
//The court heard Hayden left his girlfriend lying on the floor and went to his parents' house where he was arrested after also assaulting two police officers.//

Moses Tawo, defending, said Hayden had lost his job as a highways maintenance worker because of the charge.
He said. “There has been genuine remorse.
“His way of explanation is his alcohol abuse. It isn’t domestic violence, it is a random assault. He would come back from prison full of problems and there would be a vicious circle.
“Mr Hayden is a very sick man medically and psychologically and he needs help.”
he is still a bstard no matter...

Moses Tawo didn't pass the sentence. He's employed to do the best for his client. He won't be 'pleased as Punch' or, at least he won't be if he's like the normal defender, all he'll think is that he's done his job.
The Magistrates have great faith in anger management. They should have put him straight inside and activated the suspended sentence on top. They can reserve anger management for when he does criminal damage or some other crime in anger which does not involve thumping people.
