There is a lot of sound and fury surrounding the use of neonicotinoids and their effect on honey bees. The science seems reasonably clear - they pose a definite health risk to bees. I think there is still some debate though over whether colony collapse disorder is linked to the use of theses pesticides. Certainly the US seems to think so, as do many within the EU.
The UK abstained, along with Germany and a few others, which meant that those wishing to get an EU wide ban were unable to achieve a majority vote.
UK has some ongoing trials, the results of which will be available later this year. It will be interesting to see the results of those trials, and whether an EU wide ban can be achieved later this year, when it comes up the the commission again.

I think they should ban the use of such pesticides, myself... harms outweigh the benefits.
