The census data has a problem with it.

the question put was "What is your religion?' In practice many people will have answered with a religion that they had been brought up in rather than one they actually participate in.

So according to the survey 60% are Christian

yet only 45% of Britons believe in God

So you have to be careful what you mean

What about all those millions of people that put "Christian" on the Census but never attend any church services, even their own wedding, don't have their kids baptised, or show any connection with any organised religions whatsoever ?

In what particular way are they "Christians" ?

I worked on the Census in 2011 and helped 100's of people to complete the form. ( I must admit that it came as a bit of a shock to discover how many people were functionally illiterate ) When it came to the religious question, most people looked non-plussed and then said "Christian I suppose "

The census is a better yardstick that nothing at all, I suppose.

There are millions of people who know little about Christianity, never go near a church, but nevertheless believe in Jesus. Church attendance or otherwise is no indication of faith.

mikey4444, in all fairness I dont think you would need to demonstrate your faith to anyone to be a true Christian, I dont suppose you need to get married or to baptise your children or go to church to be a true Christian.

I'll always remember a question on BBC One's Sunday Morning Live religious debate show that went: "Is it possible to be a Christian but not believe in God?"

If people genuinely think that an answer to that question of "yes" is possible, then there are always going to be more "Christians" in surveys than is the true number. Surveys tend to have errors associated with their figures - I wonder how much this error affects things.

Jim, that's an excellent question conjuring up a plethora of thoughts, not least of which is 'what is a Christian?' Perhaps it deserves its own thread?

A Christian is one who follows Christ. Christ claimed to be the Son of God. Therefore a Christian properly believes in God. So I thought it was a stupid question.

jim, With so many interpretations of what Jesus was allegedly talking about and what his alleged intentions were, I don't think it's that simple. They all think they're true Christians, and all believe differently - so I actually think 'What is a Christian?' is a very good question.

Oh, yes, "What is a Christian?" is an important question. But the "can a Christian not believe in God?" bit isn't. I don't think.
