Retail careers with weekends off.
9 Answers
my hubbie works in retail management and has been considering a career change as he is fed up working all weekend every weekend.
Does any know of any retailers that allow staff regular weekends off?
He feels like he is missing out on quality time with the kids, but Retail is what he knows and loves too.

Senior management never work on Saturdays! Yet perculiarly they all sing the same tune when it comes to forcing others to work. " we are all a big family here, we all pull together" This is particularly evident when raising the spectre of recompence for weekend working. It's amayzing to me just how many employers claim to be " a big family who help each other" when it comes to avoiding paying time and a half and double time for weekend working. The paradox ofcourse is that come 5pm on Friday you don't see senior management for dust. This is one of the reasons I work for myself! If I chose to work on a weekend I'm not putting money in some fat cats pocket!
I'm a retail manager - I've got a lot of experience of retailers, having worked for two and recruited for several when I was a consultant. The fact of the matter is that weekends are peak trading for most retailers and managers will therefore almost always need to work them - if you don't like weekend working, don't work in retail as it's par for the course. You may get positions at sales adviser level that are Mon-Fri (Primark do this) but retailers employ saturday and sunday staff usually in addition to the weekday staff to cope with this exta trade.

I've worked the past 10 years in retail management in supermarkets/shopping centres/mobile phones.Just had a career change to retail banking with HSBC,skill set is the same, the benefits package is AMAZING, most branches are closed saturday/Sunday + bank holidays in even in the biggest branches the most I've heard of a manager working is two a month (that's one manager in one branch with 40 in the area!). Throw in the jobs challenging, most managers there have been in the bank 20 years plus...It's retails best kept secret.
