Could you take an upright piano apart into say 6 big chunks (but light enough to carry) and then put it back together and it still be ok? I know this is an odd question, but i'm thinking about putting a piano in my cellar, and obviously it would be impossible to get it down there in one piece......though actually getting it back up might be harder! thanks Folks

I would reccomend that you get a removal firm who specialise in moving pianos, and see if they can do it for you. They will be experienced, and insured, and you are more likely to end up with a piano you can play again - your theory sounds fine, but i wouldn't risk it unless you are absolutely sure you know what you are doing.

Many years ago I worked as a caretaker in a church and we had an old upright piano to dispose of. The only way to get it to the dump was to take it apart. My own experience is that once you start to take it apart it becomes like a coiled spring. Wires and bits start to spring out everywhere. It's a bit like opening a well packed package from a mail order company, then deciding to return the goods , and trying to get everything back in the box.....it just doesn't all go back in in a neat package.

Have you thought about an electric keyboard? Probably a lot less hassle!

Good answers folks!

In most cases you can remove a lot of the wooden frame, and the keys and hammers will come out in one piece. That will still leave a large mass of metal that the strings are attached to but it might be enough for your purposes.
