At about this time in ports such as Whitehaven rum was being imported from the West Indies Carribean along with sugar from various areas around the trading routes from these ports. The rums were mixed with the sugar and other ingredients to produce the rum butters which are still very common at Chistmas time throughout Cumbria today.
