Ingrown Toe Nail Surgery

Hi, Can anyone answer a question for me recovery regarding surgery to completely an ingrown toe nail please.

My OH is having this done next week and seems to be under the impression it won't affect him wearing a shoe and walking.

Having looked on YouTube, it sure looks to me like he will have a large dressing for a day or two at least.

He's a stubborn individual, so I need to know first hand what to expect to be one jump ahead.

Well he will definitely have a dressing on his toe so I guess it depends on the size of the shoe....but if he thinks he will be able to walk around in his normal shoes then finds he can't, he will have to put up with it won't he?

Admittedly I had mine done many years ago but I couldn't get a shoe on for at least three days, I was wearing a sandal (with a sock) in the slush of January :-)

Is he having the whole nail removed, or just the ingrown bit cut out?

It will take a while to heal, and believe me, it will HURT when the anasthetic wears off! I had just a side piece of nail removed because it kept ingrowing. The chiropodist gave me 2 injections to numb the toe and then I sat up and watched him with his little rotary saw blade remove the side of the nail. It was all bandaged up and he told me to buy some strong pain killers! The pain was unbearable once the injection wore off... I remember laying on the sofa sobbing!! I think I was bandaged for a few days, so a whole nail may take longer recovery time.

I had the side of the nail removed and when I told them I was planning on driving home they laughed and said no you wont be. Had to get somebody to pick my car up. Pain wasnt too bad and had a dressing for a few days.

To update for anyone interested.

Toe nail was removed yesterday. He walked out complete with his regular shoes on, with no pain. He had had 4 injections into the toe prior to the surgery so expected to need pain relief later in the day.

Day turned into night, and now morning, not one painkiller was needed.

We did as advised and wrapped a clean new dressing around the bloodied one when he got home. and covered the foot in a clean white sock that he wore all night.
This morning the outer dressing we had put on was a bit messy so we removed that and a further clean dressing added, still over the original dressing that isn't to be removed until tomorrow.

I expect it will take a while to fully recover, but the worst bit is over.

So to anyone having this little op, OH's experience wasn't bad at all.
