16d Medical condition of Washington secretary and relative (8) ?T?N?S?S

I presume it is STENOSIS (which I had to look up dammit, otherwise I wouldn't have had to cheat this week). OK the relative is SIS, but where does STENO come from? I'm stumped (yet again).

Steno(grapher) - secretary
16d Steno sis
And 'Washington' indicates it is an American expression.
Sorry - as K says steno(grapher)

OK thanks. Not my favourite clue, as there are no references to STENO being an abbreviation (on Google nor in the clue)

Fair enough Oldred!
I think it's OK - steno is in Chambers as N American informal word for a stenographer.

Not on the online version (which I've just created a link to on my desktop) or on my usual dictionary.com, but I see it is in my Collins English Dictionary, which I never use. I just learnt that sometimes paper is better than e!

Thanks
