i wouldnt recomend it. Its a pain to adhere plaster board to another, and if you do its not as long lasting. take off the old and replace.

what about if i screw the new to the old with long screws so they go into wood?

Might work okay, but why not do it the right way? Strip off the old board and do the job from scratch, then you know it's done properly, and more likely to last too.

It's hardly difficult to strip the old stuff off, and okay it's a bit messy, but it's no big deal. You'll end up with a much better finish, in my opinion.
