Eat less, move more.

Eat less, move more.
joined a Rosemary Conly thingy and got the video and other bumf, healthy eating and gentle excercise to start with.
If you've never worked out you might find it rather strenuous all of a sudden. By keeping on the move around the house, walking places instead of taking the car, using stairs instead of lifts and escalators etc all help. If you like dancing put on a CD and dance away. I find a low fat diet works for me but some prefer a low carbohydrate diet, I lack energy if I don't have enough carbohydrates. When I say diet this is a lifetime diet not a losing weight one.
If starting from scratch I'd recommend the Wii Fit (although it's obviously very expensive if you don't have a Wii). It weighs you and monitors your progress as you go along with a good choice of easy things to get you started. All DVDs I've tried were so exhausting they put me off keeping at it.
If you normally rely on a car, start off walking a little more often where poss. The Wii is great, as you can choose the training to your level of fitness and work towards a target. You should be able to get a cheap-as-chips second hand wii with wii fit board and games for a good price now. But try before you buy
Walking and swimming are the best exercise. Easy on your joints.

I was walking behind a jogger last week and was going at exactly the same pace.
I have always found it great to turn to yoga. Most yoga exercises are low impact, so they are powerful, yet less painful to the body. Many yoga poses take a little practice, but don't be intimidated by that. You will learn good form with time.
