I have an htc desire smartphone, it was on contract with Virgin but that contract has now expired so the phone has become mine, Virgin sent me the unlock code which I entered and unlocked the phone from Virgin and can now use any other service provider.
My question is do I have to get a sim card that is especially for the internet or will any sim card work bearing in mind that there is a clock and weather widget that is updating all the time, the reason I ask is because there are lots of cheap sims such as Tesco's that you put £10 credit on and if you are not a heavy call user lasts for a long time, this would suit me but woul it work in my smartphone?

Tesco will work and is a good deal. Their £7.50 could be the best for you. My daughter uses this and says it's good value.

As long as you get the correct size sim card then it should be ok. As you are a small user like my self have a look here. I have been with them for a few months now and had no problems. They use the Vodafone network, excellent help line too.

tesco do a sim for £7.50 per month with 500 mb for data which will be quite adequate for you but its a 12 contract it also includes 250 call and 5000 texts

Why pay monthly when for a one off payment of £15 you can get 150 free minutes ,150 texts and 400 mb data . FREE each month.

I believe that if you wish to connect via your mobile provider and pay them for the privilege then yes, yo need a SIM account that allows Internet connection. If you intend, as I do, to only connect via a local WiFi connection then no, you mobile should be able to connect regardless of the SIM.

Thanks for all of your answers, sorry to be thick KJN but is that just a one off payment of £15. then provided you do not exceed the limits the whole lot is renewed every month free of charge, that seems too good to be true but if it is correct it's a bargain - And thank you too Old_Geezer that may just be the way to go

400mb is data is not a lot if you plan to use the internet a fair bit

i've got fatty on a sim only plan with tesco that's £15 per month, 5000 text, 2000 minutes and 2g data - he doens;t use nearly all of that so you could probably go cheaper

Yes thats correct it is a one off payment, if you do not use more than Is stated per month then it will NOT cost you one more penny, IF you go over the limit in one month then the over the limit amount will be deductd from the £15 you first paid for when you ordered the sim, you can top up this sum,when you wish. They say that they sometimes send adverts to you, but I have never found this intrusive in fact I only remember seeing two adverts in two months. Well worth giving it a go. As I said I have no complaints with the service at all and have recommnded it to my friends. Maybe not the right deal for a heavy user but as you stated that you are a light user then I think this will suffice.I thought it was too good to be true also, but as I say had it for a while now and no complaints at all. Even their roaming prices are very good. Have a god read on their site.
