Fiat Punto 2001 Steering problem

Hello everyone,

Someone please help. My Fiat Punto Elx 2001 was doing fine until one day the power steering light came on. The light came on after me parking it for a couple of minutes and came back to drive. The next day the light went off. This happened on a few occasions. Now the light is permanently on. And the Steering is very hard. I wonder what the problem is. How do I find out if the problem is with the battery, ECU, Motor , sensor or anything else. Do I have to take it to a dealer to diagnose it? If I do how much usually it costs to diagnose it?

Do NOT take it to your dealer, & do NOT take it to K.F. unless you want a new engine, check the Power Steering Tank ( Beneath the Bonnet) does the car squeal when you turn the steering hard left / right? Low on oil, Check the belt for adjustment, are your tires inflated to the right pressure?

Thanks for the answers. I think my car's power steering is electric as it has got a city steering button on it. Or is it hydraulic .... I am not sure. If it is electric how do I fix the problem? Some one told me replacing the ecu would help. But I wonder whether replacing the ECU by myself would activate the air bags? I need your help immediately please... its been weeks since my car is sitting idle.
